真の陸上世界一決定戦。

世界のトップアスリートたちが競い、陸上世界一を決める世界陸上選手権。
その歴史は、他の競技の世界選手権に比べて、それほど古くはありません。

世界陸上以前は、世界中のトップアスリートたちがすべて集まる大会といえばオリンピックより他にありませんでした。そこで、「世界のトップアスリートたちが全員参加して、真の陸上世界一を決める大会をやろう」という声が世界の陸上関係者の間で起こりました。
このような気運の高まりの中、国際陸上競技連盟（IAAF）は、1978年プエリトリコで開いた評議委員会において「世界陸上選手権大会」を満場一致で可決。合わせて、第1回大会を国際陸連主催で、1983年8月、フィンランドのヘルシンキで開催することを決めたのです。

当初、この大会は4年に一度、オリンピックの前年に開かれていましたが、第3回の東京大会 (日本)以降、2年に一度、オリンピックの前年と翌年の隔年開催となりました。
1983年の第1回ヘルシンキ大会（フィンランド）、1987年の第2回ローマ大会（イタリア）、1991年の第3回東京大会、1993年の第4回シュツットガルト大会（ドイツ）、1995年の第5回イエテボリ大会（スウェーデン）、1997年の第6回アテネ大会（ギリシャ）、1999年の第7回セビリア大会（スペイン）、 2001年の第8回エドモントン大会（カナダ）、2003年の第9回パリ大会（フランス）、 2005年の第10回ヘルシンキ大会（フィンランド）、16年ぶりに日本開催となった2007年の第11回大阪大会、第12回の 2009年ベルリン大会（ドイツ）と、世界のトップアスリートたちが競い、全世界に熱い感動と興奮を呼び起こしてきました。

第13回の2011年テグ大会（韓国）では、200以上の国と地域の選手が参加します。今やその規模は、オリンピックやサッカーのワールドカップと並ぶ“世界三大スポーツイベント”に。そして24の世界新記録、数々の名勝負が生まれてきた世界陸上は、まさに「真の陸上世界一決定戦」にふさわしい存在となっています。
