　大邱世界陸上（８月２７日開幕）の日本代表選手結団式が１２日、都内のホテルで行われ、３７選手が参加。男子マラソン（９月４日）代表の“市民ランナーの星”川内優輝（２４）＝埼玉県庁＝は、目標の入賞達成で、数か月飲むのを控えている大好きなコーヒーで祝杯を上げる考えを明かした。代表の主将は、男子がやり投げの村上幸史（３１）＝スズキ浜松ＡＣ＝、女子が４００メートル障害の久保倉里美（２９）＝新潟アルビレックス＝が務める。

　初めて胸につけた日の丸に、気持ちが高ぶった。日本代表のジャージーで結団式に臨んだ川内は「実感が湧いてきました。責任を強く持って挑戦したい」と、気持ちを新たにした。

　初めて臨む世界大会。目標として掲げる「入賞（８位以内）」に、自ら“にんじん”をぶら下げた。「コーヒーが大好きなんですけど、今、断っているんです。入賞できたら（コーヒーで）祝杯、したいですね」。昨年の夏に夏ばてで体調を崩した反省から、今年の東京マラソンの調整に向かう昨年末からコーヒー断ちを始めた。「朝、昼、夜、食後に必ず飲んでました」というほどの好物だ。お酒の飲めない川内にとって、コーヒーはご褒美の一杯。自らの発奮材料には、うってつけの逸品だ。

　もちろん、自身のスタンスは崩さない。ほかの代表選手が海外や高地で長期合宿を張っている中、勤務先の春日部高の事務をこなしながら、週末に河口湖や日光に足を運んで練習に励んでいる。６月の隠岐の島ウルトラマラソンでは、ゴール手前で熱中症で倒れたが「２８度の中、４９キロまで独走できたことは自信になっている」とあくまでプラス指向。「リズムを崩さないことが一番大事なんです」と、マイペース調整で本戦に臨む構えだ。

　男子マラソンは、ケニアやエチオピアの東アフリカ勢が席巻しているが、世界陸上では、日本も９９年セビリア大会銅の佐藤信之から６大会連続で入賞を果たしている。日本代表の５選手の中で持ちタイム（２時間８分３７秒）１位の“県庁の星”は「僕にとっては夢舞台ですけど、皆さんに市民ランナーでも世界で戦えることを証明したい」。衝撃の走りを見せた東京マラソンの再現を狙っている。

　岡田正裕・拓大陸上部監督「コーヒーの成分であるカフェインには興奮作用があり、短距離などの瞬発系の選手が少し飲むことには効果があるようです。ただ、マラソンや長距離の選手には、あまり効果がないですし、夕方とかに飲んでしまうと、興奮して眠れなくなるなど、選手に悪影響が出てくる。（ドーピングの）禁止薬物ではないのですが、私は選手には勧めません。コーヒーを飲むよりは、牛乳の方がいいですね」
